A former singer and a charismatic host, Aguilare's jovial personality led to his club being one of the most popular in New York. He was secretly in cahoots with Connie 'The Cauldron' Smith, a diamond racketeer for the Barzini family, who used his influence to keep Aguilare on top in exchange for a cut of the action.
In the mid Fifties, Aguilare began handing his cut over to Aldo Trapani, following a Corleone attack from Hell's Kitchen.
