Born to Carmine and Italia Coppola, Francis was the second of three children, the youngest being his sister Talia Shire.
In the 1960s, he began creating low-budget films with Roger Corman, inlcuding Dementia 13. In 1971, he won an Academy Award for his screenplay of Patton, after writing The Godfather: Part I, with Mario Puzo. He was nominated for best director, but only own the Award for his next major film: The Godfather: Part II.
In later years, he directed The Conversation and Apocalypse Now with Marlon Brando and Robert Duvall, another cult classic.
He is known to feature family members in his work, including sister Talia, father Carmine and daughter Sofia, who appeared in The Godfather: Part III.
