[edit] Biography

An important figure in the running of The Vatican and Immobiliare, Lucchesi was known in the Sicilian underworld as 'Don' Lucchesi, and his Family assisted the shady dealings commited by Lucchesi, Archbishop Liam Gilday and the Swiss banker Frederick Keinszig. It was unknown exactly what position he held, but Lucchesi was believed to even have his fingers on the strings in the Italian Government.

"It's not personal, it's only business. You should know. Godfather..."
Liccio Lucchesi[src]

Outwardly, he accepted Michael Corleone as head of Immobiliare but he plotted in secret with Michael's friend, the turncoat Don Ozvaldo Altobello. Altobello introduced Lucchesi to Vincent Mancini, who pretended to side with the two plotters in order to find out their scheme. They had planned to eliminate Michael as competion following his large investment into the Vatican Bank, having previously employed Joey Zasa to wipe out the entire Commission in America, hoping to take Michael with them. Zasa was executed by Mancini, much to the two men's relief, as his media-seeking nature was threatening to ruin their plans. It also helped him to gain credit among the conspirators, who were completely taken in by his deception.

[edit] Demise

During Anthony Corleone's performance at the Teatro Massimo, Lucchesi was visited by Michael's old friend and bodyguard from Sicily, Calo who gave him Michael's message 'Power wears out those who do not have it' and stabbed Lucchesi in the neck with his own glasses. Calo was subsequently shot by Lucchesi's bodyguards.

[edit] Behind the Scenes

Lucchesi was based on real-life figure Liccio Gelli who was also involved in the Vatican scandal. But there is also a mentioning towards Guilio Andreotti, the fact that Calo's whisper "Il potere logora chi non ce l'ha" is an aforisma of Andreotti. Besides, like Lucchesi, Andreotti was a prominent political figure who was said to have connections with the Mafia.

His name came from one of the the real 'Five Families' the Lucchese Family.
