The Sistine Chapel (Italian: Cappella Sistina) is a chapel located within the Apostolic Palace at the Vatican. Originally built under orders of Pope Sixtus IV in the late 15th century, the chapel is famous for the frescoes painted by Michelangelo, and is the site of important church functions.

Following the death of Pope Paul VI, the Cardinals of the Church gathered within the Sistine Chapel to elect a new Pontiff. Cardinal Lamberto was soon elected Pope and took the name John Paul I.
