Sterling Hayden was an American actor and author.
Born in New Jersey, Hayden was adopted at the age of nine and moved to New Hampshire. He ran away and became a ship's boy at the age of 17, and later became interested in movies, marrying his first co-star Madeleine Caroll in 1942.
After two film roles, he joined the COI as an agent, and later became a Marine and (briefly) a Communist. He continued acting merely to finance his many voyages and journeys. He appeared in several sucessful movies, including The Godfather (as Captain McCluskey) and Dr Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.
Sterling Hayden died of prostate cancer in 1986.
