After she played Connie Corleone in The Godfather, Shire became famous for playing Rocky Balboa's girlfriend (later wife) in the Rocky series. She was nominated for two Academy Awards, one for Rocky and a Best Supporting Actress Award for The Godfather Part II.
She continues to act to this day. Her son, Jason Schwartzman, is also an actor. She was formerly married to, and takes her surname from, composer David Shire, who scored Coppola's The Conversation.
